Bidding strategy in hidden car auctions: how dealers bid well

Dealer calculating a bid limit for an online car auction at a desk

When nobody sees anyone else’s bid, it is not tactics that win but the calculation. How to set your limit, work in net figures and bid with discipline.

The limit is set before the bid

Every good bidding strategy starts with a number fixed before the auction: your maximum price derived from resale value, repair costs, transport, expected standing days and target margin. This limit is non-negotiable — not even in the final minutes of the countdown. Auction psychology works on professionals just as it does on private buyers; the difference is that professionals know it and guard against it.

In a hidden auction that number matters even more, because there are no interim figures to orient yourself by. No dealer sees another bidder’s amount, company name or identity; all that is visible is the number of bidders and the time of the last bid. Without a number of your own there is nothing left to hold on to at that moment — with one, you bid calmly. We can additionally switch off the number of bidders and the time of the last bid — you then see your own bids only.

Calculating cleanly: from resale value to the net bid

Your bid is a net amount — and it is exactly the price you pay if you win. There is no automatic proxy bidding from a stored maximum as on eBay, so nothing is ever raised "on your behalf". Work backwards, item by item:

  • Resale value: the realistic selling corridor in your own market, not the price you hope for
  • Reconditioning: translate the documented damage into your workshop’s real costs
  • Side items: tyres at the wear limit, a missing COC, detailing, transfer
  • Standing days: tied-up capital, space and financing costs until the car sells
  • Tax case: whether VAT can be shown is stated with the vehicle — under the margin scheme there is no VAT and therefore no input tax deduction

Hidden bidding: why discipline beats tactics

On biet2biet every bid is hidden — not optionally, but always. That removes the basis for the classic bidding war: you cannot deter anyone with a visible figure, and nobody can read your buying level. For a dealer who buys regularly in the same segment that is precisely the advantage: your calculation stays a trade secret, across dozens of auctions.

In practice: bid the amount your calculation supports instead of feeling your way towards figures you cannot see. A minimum bid increment of €100 can be switched on; while it is off you are entirely free in the amount. And because you never have to out-step anyone, you save yourself the ten-euro top-ups — one properly calculated bid is worth more than five timid ones.

Timing, the weekend pause and the highest-bidder status

Your own standing is visible at all times: "you are the highest bidder" or "you have been outbid" — without any other party’s amount being revealed. If you are outbid, an e-mail goes out to you by default; you can switch that notice off as you place your bid. Treat such a message as a question put to your calculation, not as an instruction: if your limit still has room, raise once properly; if it does not, let the vehicle go.

On timing you can stay relaxed. The bidding clock pauses at the weekend: from Saturday 08:00 to Monday 08:00 no hour counts and the deadline shifts back by exactly those 48 hours. Because the pause is therefore exactly as long as the bidding period, an auction that runs across the weekend ends at the very time of day it was listed — just four days later instead of two: a Friday auction that starts at 14:00 runs out on Tuesday at 14:00. Auctions that never touch the pause end after 48 hours as usual. You can still bid during that time. So place your bid when your appraisal is complete, not in the final second. If you know your limit you do not need tactics: either the award fits your calculation, or the next vehicle is already on its way — with daily purchasing that is not an empty phrase.

FAQ

Can I see who is bidding against me?

No. Every bid is hidden: neither the amount nor the company name nor the identity of another bidder is shown. All that is visible is the number of bidders and the time of the last bid — enough to gauge the competition, too little to give away your calculation. We can additionally switch off the number of bidders and the time of the last bid — you then see your own bids only.

How do I know whether my bid is still leading?

Your own status is visible at all times: "you are the highest bidder" or "you have been outbid". The other amount stays hidden. On top of that we notify you by e-mail by default as soon as you are outbid; you can switch that off directly when placing your bid.

Is there a minimum increment?

MKAA can switch on a minimum bid increment of €100. It is currently switched off — so you bid exactly the amount your calculation supports, with no mandatory steps. When the increment is active your bid has to exceed the current highest bid by at least that amount; the size of that bid still stays hidden.

Can I store a maximum bid that bids automatically for me?

No. The amount you bid is exactly the price you pay if you win — net and without automatic proxy bidding as on eBay. You can raise your bid yourself at any time while the bidding window is open. The award is ultimately made by the seller.
